What To Consider When Buying A HEPA Air Purifier

HEPA air purifier models are certified by the United States government to be capable of removing pollutants from the air which are .3 microns or higher. To qualify for this official certification purifiers must be able to remove 99.97% of all airborne pollutants within this range, an it is important to note that some purifiers which do not meet this standard can be given misleading designations. If you are looking for the purest air quality, be sure that the purifier you buy has a genuine HEPA classification.

The first question you need to ask yourself is exactly what you want to achieve with an air purification system. Many of the HEPA models are specifically designed to create purified air in commercial situations. Airplanes and commercial buildings are usually equipped with some form of HEPA filtration. In these situations filtering the air is essential as there are many possible pollutants which can affect the health of individuals and possibly leave the operators legally liable. Commercial HEPA purifiers have to be designed in such a way as to capture all of the air which is flowing into the area, otherwise the intended purification will be completely ineffective.

The HEPA purifiers are highly suitable for these mass commercial situations where hundreds of people will typically pass through a given area of space. Even though they are only effective with larger particles of airborne pollution, they are highly effective at purifying the air within these parameters. HEPA air purifiers are not so suitable for private homes where many of the airborne pollution particles are smaller than the lower limit of their capability. These purifiers, given the right filters, will have some purifying effect, but it will be less than you could achieve with a dedicated domestic purifier.

Even though the HEPA air purifier can come in for some criticism due to the fact that it cannot deal effectively with all grades of airborne pollution, there is one aspect of this filter which is highly desirable. It is one of the safest ways of producing pure air because there is no production of ozone. Many of the domestic purifiers which are sold in the Western world actually generate small amounts of ozone, which can be dangerous to inhale if the premises are properly ventilated. To use such purifiers in commercial buildings would be untenable as there will be some members of the public with asthma and other breathing conditions.

The main expenses involved in running HEPA purifiers are the changing of the filters and the powering of the unit. In commercial buildings the expense of electric power is typically a small fraction of the overall consumption of the building, depending on the use to which the building is put. The filters will need to be changed whenever they become clogged or dirty, and this how often this needs to be done will depend entirely upon the pollution levels in the building. In extreme cases, the air is filtered through a pre-filter before it reaches the HEPA unit, to remove excessive pollution in advance.

Buying a HEPA air purifier is a significant expense for any business which has to deal with large numbers of the general public, but it is one which needs to be borne if you are to provide the best facilities possible. Make sure that you look at the labeling closely as there are many substandard products labeled as being near HEPA or 99% HEPA, and these have probably never been tested or properly graded. Make sure that you look for the actual government certification and only spend money on a genuine HEPA air purifier.
